Does the Moon Affect Your Period? What the Research Actually Shows
The believers and the debunkers are both more certain than the evidence allows.
Probably not in the way the traditions describe, and the honest answer is stranger than either side tends to admit. A 2024 study followed 35,940 women through 311,064 menstrual cycles over three years and found a clear rhythm in when periods started. It was not lunar. Periods began most often on Thursdays and Fridays, a seven day pattern that held in every age group, in every phase of the moon, and in all four seasons. A lunar rhythm did turn up in the same data, but the researchers described it as statistically significant and not as clearly defined. Meanwhile a separate group, working with decades of individual women’s records instead of pooled averages, keeps finding real lunar synchrony in some women some of the time. Both findings can be true at once, and why they can is the useful part.
The seven day rhythm nobody expected
Start with the finding that should unsettle everyone, believers included. In that 2024 dataset, the strongest cycle in the timing of menstruation was the working week.
The paper does not claim to know why, and neither will this page. It is an association in a very large sample, not a mechanism. But it is worth sitting with, because it is the shape of the problem. Your cycle sits inside a life. It is surrounded by sleep that shifts on Fridays, alcohol that clusters on weekends, travel, deadlines, illness, stress that arrives on someone else’s schedule. Any real lunar signal has to be picked out from underneath all of that, and the moon is a quiet input compared with the week you are actually living.
That is also why the confident debunk is unsatisfying. Finding a stronger competing rhythm does not prove the weaker one is absent. It proves it is hard to see.
The finding that complicates the tidy answer
In 2021, a research group published an analysis in Science Advances of long term menstrual records kept by individual women, some spanning decades. They reported that cycles with a period longer than 27 days were intermittently synchronous with the moon’s luminance and gravimetric cycles, and that with age, and with exposure to artificial light at night, cycles shortened and lost that synchrony.
Read that carefully, because the wording is doing precise work. Not “women’s cycles follow the moon.” Intermittently synchronous, in some cycles, in some women, and fading under modern lighting.
Their 2025 follow up sharpened it further. Comparing records from the past 24 years against records from the past century, they found that cycles recorded before the introduction of LED lighting around 2010 synchronized with the moon significantly, while cycles recorded after 2010 coupled mostly in January. The authors hypothesize that the unusually strong gravitational alignment of moon, sun and earth each January is enough to pull cycles into step, while artificial light at night interferes the rest of the year.
That is a hypothesis, offered as one, by the people who collected the data. It is not established biology and this page is not going to dress it up as any. But it is a real hypothesis in a real journal, and it deserves better than being waved away.
Why the two camps keep talking past each other
Here is the argument that makes the whole disagreement make sense, and it is the most interesting idea in this literature.
In 2021 a paper in BioEssays made a methodological case that the scientific consensus is an artifact of how the studies were built. Human responses to lunar cycles, it argued, are heterogeneous: synchrony can be temporary, it can attach to more than one type of lunar cycle, to more than one phase, and to more than one resonant frequency. Given that variability, aggregate analyses used in almost all previous studies would likely have cancelled out individuals’ responses and led to false negative results.
Think about what that means in practice. Suppose lunar synchrony is real for a minority of women, and suppose those women lock on at different phases: some at the full moon, some at the new. Pool them into one average and the signal does not shrink, it vanishes, because the two halves cancel. You would get a clean null result from data that contained a real effect.
This is not a fringe complaint. It is a specific, testable objection to a specific analytical method, and it explains why the studies with the most participants keep finding nothing while the studies that follow individual women over years keep finding something.
It also, in fairness, cuts the other way. A method that finds patterns in individual long records is exactly the method most vulnerable to finding patterns that are not there. Neither camp has closed the question. Anyone telling you otherwise, in either direction, is telling you about their confidence rather than about the evidence.
So what is actually true
Three things can be said without stretching.
The population level claim is weak. Across large groups of modern women, the moon is not a good predictor of when your period arrives. If your cycle is 29 days and the lunar month is 29.5, the two will drift in and out of alignment on their own, and that drift will look meaningful for a few months at a time without meaning anything.
The individual level claim is open. Whether some women, particularly those with longer cycles and less light at night, genuinely entrain to a lunar rhythm is an unresolved research question with published evidence on both sides.
And the mechanism, if one exists, is not settled. Luminance and gravimetric coupling are hypotheses under investigation, not textbook physiology.
What none of this supports is the version you will find most often online: that your cycle is supposed to align with the moon, and that being out of step means something is wrong with you. Nothing in this literature says that. Cycle length varies enormously between healthy women, and it varies more once you reach your late thirties and forties.
The only version of this you can actually check
You cannot resolve a contested research question from your sofa. You can answer a much better question, which is whether your cycle does anything interesting relative to the moon.
That takes about three months of honest records: when your period starts, and what the moon was doing. Not a feeling about it afterwards, which is where memory quietly rearranges things to make a better story. Written down at the time.
Most women who do this find no relationship, and that is a genuinely useful result. Some find their cycle drifting slowly against the lunar month, which is what two similar but unequal rhythms do. A few find something that holds. If you are going to track anything about your cycle, tracking it against a real question beats tracking it out of vague obligation.
When your cycle is worth a doctor’s attention
Whatever the moon is or is not doing, some cycle changes deserve a professional rather than a calendar. The NHS advises you to see a GP if your periods are irregular, if they last longer than seven days, if you are bleeding between periods, or if irregular periods come alongside symptoms like weight gain, tiredness, facial hair growth, or dry or oily skin.
Add to that anything that is new and persistent for you. Bleeding after sex, periods that have become dramatically heavier, or any bleeding at all after a full year without one. Cycles that shorten and then scatter in your forties are usually perimenopause doing what perimenopause does, but usually is not a diagnosis, and it is not a reason to skip the appointment.
A last thought
There is a version of this topic that treats women as gullible for finding the question interesting, and it is both unpleasant and wrong. People have watched the sky and their own bodies for a very long time, noticed that two rhythms run at nearly the same length, and wondered. That is not superstition. That is the observation that starts science, and researchers are still working on it, in real journals, right now.
What you deserve is not a comforting yes or a dismissive no. It is the actual state of the evidence, which is that the question is open, the effect if it exists is small and inconstant, and the only cycle whose pattern you can genuinely learn is your own.
